Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is ModernMaffia (dev)?

A browser-based organized-crime game — no app to install, just log in and run your rackets. Build a crew, take districts by force, and make a name for yourself.

Is it free to play?

Yes. There are no purchases of any kind — every dollar in the game is earned by playing.

What's a specialization, and can I change it later?

Every player picks one of four paths at signup — Street, Hacker, Financier, or Marksman. You can reset it later from your Profile's "Danger Zone," but that wipes your character back to a fresh start (crew excepted) and only once every 7 days. See the Manual for what each path actually does.

Do I have to join a crew?

No — plenty of the game (crimes, The Supplier, the casino, travel) works fine solo. Crews unlock the shared bank, a personal dirty stash, territory, heists, and wars.

Crimes & Progression

How do crimes work?

Spend Energy on a crime you can afford and the server resolves it instantly — win and you're paid (and gain Heat), lose and you're not. A few "big job" crimes take real time instead, with a progress bar.

What are Energy, Nerve, Health, and Heat?

Energy paces how much you can grind (it regenerates over time), Nerve gates riskier plays like PvP, Health drops when you're hospitalized, and Heat is police attention that can get you raided or jailed. Full breakdown in the Manual.

What happens if I get jailed or hospitalized?

You're locked out of most actions until time passes, or you can pay to get out early — bail from jail, treatment from the hospital. The Jail page lists everyone currently locked up.

How do I get stronger over time?

Rank up by earning Respect, gear up at The Supplier, and spend skill points — earned from successful crimes — on your class's skill tree at /skills.

Money: Cash, the Bank & the Safe

What's the difference between Clean Cash and Dirty Cash?

Clean Cash is legitimate money that spends anywhere and can't be seized in a raid. Dirty Cash is crime proceeds — it's exposed to the law until you launder it at the Bank for a cut.

What is the Safe, and why would I use it?

Your wallet is spendable but exposed to robbery and raids. Your personal Safe shelters Clean Cash from robbery and even earns daily interest, but it's not directly spendable — move it back to your wallet first.

What's the Personal Stash, and why is it locked?

A per-member Dirty-cash safe that only crew members get. It shelters your money from a RICO seizure, but every deposit resets a withdrawal lock — see the Manual for the exact rules.

Gear, The Supplier & the Phone

What can I buy, and what does gear do?

The Supplier sells weapons, vehicles, property, real estate, and a phone — each improving a different stat. Prices run from entry-level gear up to a top-end compound worth working toward across a season.

What does "hot" vs "legit" mean when I buy something?

Hot (stolen) goods are cheaper and paid in Dirty Cash, but raise your Heat and can be seized in a raid. Legit goods cost more but carry none of that risk.

What are weapon crates and rarities?

Weapons come in rarities from Common to Legendary that scale their stats and resale value. A Weapon Crate at The Supplier gambles on a random one, and a successful crime occasionally drops one too.

Where do I sell gear — Pawn Shop or the Fence?

The Pawn Shop is an instant, guaranteed sale for less than full value. The Fence — on your Phone — is a player-to-player marketplace, usually for more.

What's the Phone for?

Owning a phone (bought like any other gear) unlocks the /phone hub — the PocketVegas casino and the Fence marketplace both live there.

Crews, PvP, Territory & Travel

What can my crew actually do together?

Share a crew bank, run district businesses for income, pull off multi-player heists, hold territory, and declare wars against rivals. Full mechanics in the Manual.

Can other players attack or rob me?

Yes — but only while you're not already "busy" (mid-crime, mid-heist, traveling, jailed, or hospitalized). A hired Bodyguard can also shield you for a few hits.

How do bodyguards and newcomer protection work?

Every new account starts with one free bodyguard. After that you can hire more from the Bodyguard page — but going on the offensive yourself immediately drops your own protection.

How do businesses and territory work?

Each business type exists once per city, run by whichever crew holds the district it sits on. See the Manual for how turf, patronage fees, and crew HQs actually work.

How does travel between cities work?

Travel is by map and by distance — farther cities cost more and take longer. You're "busy" (and safe from attack) while in transit.

How do drug prices work, and why can't I see other cities' prices?

Prices reset every couple of hours, and you only see live prices for the city you're standing in — unless you're a Hacker. Full mechanics in the Manual's Drug Run pages.

What is the Demand Board on The Corner?

A rotating set of buyer orders, each paying a premium to deliver a specific drug to a specific city. Full mechanics in the Manual.

Seasons, Fair Play & Support

What's a "season," and what do I lose when one ends?

Roughly every 90 days, everyone's cash, rank, stats, gear, and territory reset — but your account, specialization, and crew survive. Top finishers earn permanent prestige and a Hall of Fame spot.

Are the NPCs on the leaderboard and City page real players?

No — some accounts are NPCs, seeded to keep the world feeling populated. They can be robbed or fought like anyone else.

The client shows me a number — is that trustworthy, or could someone cheat it?

The server decides every outcome — every crime, every fight, every hand of blackjack. Nothing the client shows you was computed by your browser.

I found a bug or have an idea — where do I send it?

Use the feedback button in the top bar on any page once you're logged in. It goes straight to the developer, and you can attach a screenshot.

Is the game finished, or still changing?

ModernMaffia is in active development. Balance, features, and mechanics can change at any time, and the game world may be reset or wiped without notice. See the Patch Notes page for what's actually shipped, version by version.
